Medical care encompasses many aspects and this varies from patient to patient. Because of this, some people may choose to complement their formal medical treatment with alternative medicine, such as the Salvadoran refugees from Longo Mai, Costa Rica, who use herbal medicine to alleviate common ailments. Historically, religiosity and spirituality (R/S) has been used as a tool to liberate one’s mind from body in an attempt to cope with fear and pain. This idea still holds true today. Spirituality is the collection of human experiences and a person’s attempt to process it in a way that allows him to find meaning and purpose in life. These experiences include the relationships that people have with one another, with nature, and with deities.
