Abstract
Based on ancient traditional Chinese medicine, yoga is a complementary alternative therapy that is widely practiced that can assist with the adoption of bodily postures for relaxation and promotion of health. Because of the increase of individuals living with a chronic disease, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and the increasing health care costs associated with treatment, as well as the burdens on health care systems and patients, the implementation of a cost-effective way to manage symptoms has become necessary. Evidence-based research supports yoga to decrease side effects from pharmaceuticals and provide a self-care option to promote overall health. Due to lack of knowledge by health care providers, yoga is still under-utilized in mainstream medicine, therefore, the exploration of evidence-based research and other literature regarding benefits of yoga as symptom management to patients with rheumatoid arthritis was explored.
