Abstract

The findings of the current literafure suggest that encouraging independent reading and cultivating lifelong readers, as the state standards require , are best served by activities and assessment that differ from traditional summative assessments. This paper examines current strategies and evaluates practices in teaching and assessing independent reading, and provides a toolbox for how a district can incorporate those recommendations into a revised curriculum.
